When most tourists plan their trip to Costa Rica, they include rafting, canyoning, and hiking, yet there is another gem to be found, Costa Rica caves, the Venado Caves, Cavernas de Venado. Caving (exploring Costa Rica Caves) is an activity on the rise that allows another side, the underside, of Costa Rica to be discovered.
The Venado Caves are amazing and contain waterfall and fascinating stalactites and stalagmites along with fossilized coral and other marine creatures. What is even more fascinating is that many of the cave configurations are dated over 6 million years old. And still, to this day, rock formations continue to be carved out with a running underground river flowing through the caves.
The height and width of many of the caverns differ. Some of the caverns stand 20 feet tall while others require you crawl on your stomach to make your way through. All in all, the caves cover approximately a mile and a half and have ten distinctive rooms, known as ‘Salas’.
When you decide to add caving Costa Rica it is best to bring extra dry-fit clothes and were close-toed shoes. Our guides will outfit you with any other equipment needed (hardhat, flashlight) and there will be a talk of what to expect, how to navigate the caves, and what you can anticipate so you’ll feel comfortable and safe.
